Flyer This page and it's content is a work in progress !

This is the page for Hiroshi Masumura's adaptations of Night on the Galactic Railroad. Unlike most of the adaptations existing, this is nearly exact, often being word for word and including each scene from the story. The movie is almost a condensed version of this work, or at least the source of it's character designs and general art direction.

Drawn by Hiroshi Masumura, it carries from his other works, particularly the world of Atagoul.

First release in 1983 was his manga adapting the final draft, published by Asahi Sonorama. It came with a map of the Galactic Railroad's route which hasn't appeared in any subsequent releases.

Then June 1985 from the same publisher was the redrawn Dr. Burcanillo Edition, including content from the prior drafts. Sold for 850¥, it also included The Life of Budori Gusuko and The Ten Powered Diamond from Kenji Miyazawa.

In 1995 Fusosha Publishing released a book including both the Final Draft edition from 1983 and the Burcanillo Edition from 1985, sold for 524¥ and exclusively as paperback.

In 2001 Kaiseisha Published a hardcover edition for 1,800¥, including both versions again along with different afterwords from Hiroshi Masumura and Taijirō Amazawa.

An artbook including various materials from the 1985 movie, published by Asahi Sonorama for 1,800¥ and written by Hiroshi Masumura, ASAHI GROUP and Japan Herald Films.

Masumura was also credited for the artwork or other additions for 「賢治からの切符「銀河鉄道の夜」思索ノート」 (1995), 「別冊太陽 日本のこころ50 宮沢賢治 銀河鉄道の夜 」 (1985) and 「月刊 星ナビ 宮沢賢治「銀河鉄道の夜」スペシャル 」 (2001).

Currently there's a new and redrawn version which has been in progress for numerous years and on a much larger scale, published by Fusosha and Kaiseisha to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Night on the Galactic Railroad being written. A more loose adaptation of the final draft expanded over 600 pages of detailed illustrations.

Translations

English

My personal translation isn't yet complete and rather rough in quality for now, but it's in active progress. Based on the 2008 reprints of Fusosha's 1995 collection.

Russian

The only complete translation of the work is into Russian, published by Alt-Graph and done by Yekaterina Ryabova Aleksandrovna in 2020. There was an alternate cover version as well. It covers the 1983 final draft and 1985 Dr. Burcanillo editions.
